Heronclaw had left camp well before sunrise that morning. Even earlier than when her sister usually awakens.
Things have been tense between them ever since Thistlestar became Deputy of RiverClan, rather than her. But that was over eight moons ago. She shouldn't still be bitter.
But, yet she was. Still fuming; still angry.
Heronclaw was her mothers firstborn, the only of Brightfur's first litter to survive kitbirth. She was treasured by her mother; that was... until 10 moons later, when she became a warrior and Brightfur accounced she was expecting another litter. Besides the danger of having kits at her age, Heronclaw was excited for a sibling or siblings. When Thistlekit arrived --- the only to survive again --- everything changed for Heronclaw.
It was like her mother forgot Heronclaw existed. All she cared about was Thistekit. And on some level, Heronclaw understood: Thistlekit looked like Lightfur, her father, and Heronclaw looked like her father, Mudtail... the traitor to RiverClan.
Mudtail was a very ambitious tom, who wanted to be leader. He tried to murder Spotstar when he was Deputy, but she in the end beat him out and banished him from the Clans. No one has seen him since.
Heronclaw knew her mother wanted to forget Mudtail's ultimate betrayal, and used Thistlekit and her father, Lightfur to do just that. So, yes, Heronclaw understood her mothers reasons... but that didn't mean she liked it.
She was never able to take it out on her mother. Thistlekit, from the very beginning was another story. But, she did it in an unique way: she pushed Thistlepaw to work extra hard in her training, but embarrassed her in spars whenever she could.
But, still even though Heronclaw was terrible to her sister, Thistlestar never --- ever --- seemed the judge her for it, or look down upon her, or even retaliate. That made Heronclaw furious.
So, when Thistlepaw became Thistlestripe, and then a moon later, Lightfur died in a battle with ShadowClan, Heronclaw thought she'd get her mother back.
She was wrong.
It was just entering leaf-bare and an early bout of greencough struck the Clan; Lightfurs death was still very recent, and Brightfur was still very unhappy. Unfortunately, Brightfur was the first death from the greencough that season.
Heronclaw was distraught and took it out on anycat that irked her in anyway. But she especially went out of her way to torment Thistlestripe, who had become Deputy.
After two moons of that, Spotstar called Heronclaw to a meeting... and intervention. Spotstar gave her a talking to, saying her behavior was inappropiate and destroying the Clan; as well as her sister. Heronclaw lashed out with angry words, and left camp for two days. But she came back, and Spotstar let her. The next day, Spotstar was crushed by a fallen tree, and Thistlestripe became Thistlestar.
Heronclaw never hated her sister more than she did the day she went to the Moonpool to recieve her nine lives from StarClan.
So, now, Heronclaw escapes early mornings with the Clan to sit on the Halfbridge and watch the sun rise.
She is bitter and angry.
Things can't go this way much longer.
